About the Instruction Manual

Most aspects of building and editing your artHIVES website should be self evident by the presence of onscreen prompts and instructions. This instruction manual is designed to compliment the general intuitive design of the artHIVES editing system. Advanced users may find little reason to consult this manual, however it is recommended that all users read the Troubleshooting section.

It is important to keep your contact details up to date.

Click the UPDATE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS link in the YOUR PROFILE section of your back office. After changing any of the details, hit the update button, your changes will be recorded and you will be returned to the main page of your back office.

The fields marked with an asterix on the UPDATING YOUR CONTACT DETAILS page are compulsory fields. Information can be changed in these fields, but not removed.

Changing your Name or Alias

If you change your FIRST NAME, SURNAME, ALIAS FIRST NAME OR ALIAS SURNAME on the UPDATING YOUR CONTACT DETAILS page, this will also change the name that appears on the header of your website.

It is not mandatory to use the ALIAS FIRST NAME or ALIAS SURNAME fields, however a name entered in either ALIAS field will override the FIRST NAME and SURNAME, and the name entered in the ALIAS field/s will appear on the header of your website.

About Mailing List

Because visitors to your artHIVES website can put themselves onto your Mailing List you have a valuable tool for developing an interested and relevant audience. You too can add your existing clients and use your artHIVES back office to keep all of your records up to date.

From your back office you have the ability to edit every aspect of your list, email to individuals, collectors, other artists or your entire list. Whether you are emailing to one person or hundreds, your message is sent instantly, all at the click of your mouse.

Undelivered emails will be returned to your inbox so that you will know when an address becomes redundant. If you notice an email address appearing on your mailing list more than once, don't worry, your web based emailer will only send a single message to duplicated addresses.

Your mailing list is designed to allow you to easily maintain a relevant and up to date data base, allowing you to take advantage of one of the most cost effect means of promotion.

Adding members

To add a new member to your Mailing List, click the "Mailing List" button in the front end of your website and complete the mailing list form on behalf of the new member.

About URLs

A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the unique address that appears in the address bar of the internet browser for each page of your site. Here is a brief explanation of the three types of URLs:

Plain-English URLs
The Plain-English URL is automatically generated depending upon the title you give a Gallery, Artwork or News&Text article. For example the Title of a Gallery is: "Out of the Night | Doggett Street Studio | 18 November - 10 December 2005" The Plain-English URL for this page is: www.visualartist.info/scottwhitaker/out-of-the-night-doggett-street-stud...

Custom URLs
You also have the option to edit the Plain-English URL for Gallery, Artwork and News&Text pages. The example above could be changed to: www.visualartist.info/scottwhitaker/out-of-the-night This example, is a URL that is really easy to remember or dictate over the phone.

Short URLs
Short URLs which typically get used in Social Media. This is really useful for Twitter users who has a 140 characters limit per tweet. Short URL work in just the same way as the Plain-English URLs when you send them in an email or type them into a browser. This is how the gallery called "Out of the Night | Doggett Street Studio | 18 November - 10 December 2005" looks as a Short URL: http://arthiv.es/g/1914

Customising URLs

It is possible to edit the URL for Galleries, Artwork and News&Text pages.  The main purpose for doing this is to shorten a URL or alter a URL to make it more memorable or more self evident.

In the URL box at the bottom of each edit page, enter an alternative URL title into the Custom URL field. It is only possible to use lowercase alphanumeric characters in the URL name as other characters can interfere with the correct operation of a URL.
